WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore guard Austin Butler scored 26 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the field, to lead the Holy Cross men’s basketball team to a 93-81 victory over Sacred Heart at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Crusaders begin the year at 1-0 with the win, while the Pioneers start the season 0-1.

Holy Cross made 55.6 percent of its field goal attempts on the night (35 of 63) and 44.0 percent of its shots from three-point range (11 of 25). The Crusaders also forced Sacred Heart to commit 20 turnovers on the night, while handing out 25 assists. The Pioneers hit 67.4 percent of their shots from the floor (31 of 46), but attempted 17 fewer shots than Holy Cross.

The Crusaders held a 17-13 lead at the 13:48-mark of the first half, before going to a 13-2 run to take a 30-15 advantage. Butler drained three three-point field goals during that spurt. Holy Cross was later up 43-30, before scoring the final eight point of the half to take a 51-30 lead into the locker room.

The Crusaders led by at least 14 points for the majority of the second half, and were still up by 21 (93-72) with 1:22 left to play. Sacred Heart then scored the final nine points of the night to make the final score look respectable.

Senior guard Patrick Benzan scored a career-high 19 points on the night, while hitting nine of 10 shots from the floor. Sophomore guard Caleb Green added 13 points, five assists and two steals, and sophomore forward Matt Faw tied his career high with 12 points. The Pioneers were led by Sean Hoehn with 25 points.

Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 10, when it travels to No. 19 Michigan for a 7:30 p.m. game.

• Senior forward Jehyve Floyd handed out a career-best 11 assists on the night.
• The Crusaders improve to 70-30 all-time in season openers, winning two straight and five of their last seven.
• Dating back to last season, Holy Cross has now shot 50.0 percent or better from the field in 10 of its last 15 games.
• The 93 points scored were the Crusaders’ most against a Division I opponent since a 122-118 double overtime victory over Sacred Heart on Nov. 13, 2013 (including 98 points in regulation).
• Holy Cross also scored its most points in a season opener since defeating Colgate 114-91 on Nov. 27, 1989.
