Football Wins Second Straight with 40-14 Victory at Lafayette
WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior quarterback Geoff Wade hit on 16 of 21 passes for a season-high 289 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Holy Cross football team to a 40-14 victory over Lafayette at Fisher Stadium. Wade also rushed seven times for 23 yards, to finish with 312 yards of total offense. The Crusaders improve to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in the Patriot League with the win, while the Leopards fall to 3-6 on the season and 2-3 in the conference.
Lafayette opened the game by jumping out to a 14-0 first quarter lead behind touchdown runs by Nick Pearson and C.J. Amill. Holy Cross came back with 17 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 17-14 halftime lead. After freshman placekicker Derek Ng booted a 36-yard field goal, junior tailback Domenic Cozier added two one-yard scoring runs to give the Crusaders the lead.
Holy Cross then put the game away in the third quarter with 23 straight points. Cozier scored his third touchdown of the day from two yards out, while Wade threw touchdown passes of 50 yards to senior wide out Richie DeNicola and 27 yards to senior tight end Derek Mountain. In addition, Ng kicked a second field, from 24 yards out.
DeNicola finished the day with four catches for 90 yards, and Cozier added 53 rushing yards on 15 carries. Senior linebacker Ryan Brady posted a team-best six total tackles, while junior defensive back Chris Riley finished with five tackles and two pass breakups.
Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 10, when it plays host to Fordham at 12:05 p.m.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• The Crusaders have now won during six of their last seven trips to Lafayette.
• Following today’s performance, the Holy Cross defense has held its opponent scoreless in the second half four times this season.
• Freshman defensive back John Smith recorded his first career interception in the third quarter.
• All 54 points in the game were scored by the team with the wind at its back.
