WORCESTER, Mass. – On Saturday, Sept. 6, the Holy Cross softball team took part in the Second Annual Live4Evan Memorial 5K Race & Walk at EMC Park in Hopkinton, Mass. Created by friends and family, Live4Evan is an organization honoring the memory of Evan Girardi, who was born with a congenital heart disease and passed away suddenly in 2010.
For junior outfielder Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.)
, this organization is close to her heart. "I grew up, played sports, and went to school with his younger sisters my whole life, so the Girardi family was one that I was close with." She explained that during Evan's senior year of college at Loyola University in Maryland, he died from a heart arrhythmia in his dorm room, and the news of his passing took everyone by surprise. "His family and many of his close friends, shocked by the news and suddenness of this tragedy, took sharing his story and remembering his miracle of life with others."
"The entire softball team supported not only me, but the Girardi family and ran the 5K and donated to the wonderful cause that now exists," said Jarvis. Altogether, the team was able to raise $700. The money raised supports the Boston Children's Hospital Heart Center, the Boston Cardiac Foundation, Hopkinton High School Scholarship Funds and other organizations locally and around the globe. This year's race was held on the four year anniversary of Evan's death.
Coach Brian Claypool talked about how important it was to see his team going out and supporting a good cause: "The team was up early, talking with other people at the event and were really excited." He explained how the team is all about community service this season, and how proud he is of them.
