Aug. 31, 2005

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's and women's cross country teams are already well into team training sessions for the 2005 fall season, which starts Sept. 3 with the Central Connecticut State Blue Devil Invitational in New Britain, Conn.

Last year the men and women finished 3rd and 6th, respectively, in the Blue Devil Invitational.

The men's and women's team will again be lead by coach Jim Kavanagh, who is returning for his 29th year as the head coach and 7th as director of men's and women's cross country and track and field.

"Both of our teams' success will be dictated by the freshmen classes. We lost a lot of talent to graduation but we know there is a lot of potential in our freshmen."

In the Patriot League, both the men and women were picked to finished 8th in the preseason polls. The American University men and the Army women are the preseason Patriot League favorites.

Women's Cross Country

The 2005-2006 women's team will be lead by junior captain Megan Hyland (Rye, N.Y.) and will include five seniors: Brittany Chapman (Haddonfield, N.J.), Grace Doherty (Scranton, Pa.), Erin Duggan (Rockville Center, N.Y.) and Bethany Miczek (Leicester, Mass.).

An influx of freshman talent including Colleen Spilka (Hamden, Conn.), Emma Pace (Porter Corner, N.Y.) and Alexandra Swiatocha (Mahopac, N.Y.) could contribute as the year goes on.

In the NCAA Regionals, the women finished 29th concluding a season in which they made solid showings at the New England Championship (19th of 45) and the National Catholic Invitational (8th of 31).

All Patriot League Championships will take place Saturday, Oct. 29 at Lehigh University.
