Crusaders Win Falcon Classic

Fitchburg , Mass. - The Holy Cross men's and women's cross country teams both ran away with first place at the Fitchburg State Falcon Classic on Friday, Sept. 17.
The women's team placed nine of the top ten spots to help the Crusaders finish with 15 points, while second place host Fitchburg State finished with 50 points. Anna Maria finished third with 95 points and Framingham State was fourth with 100 points.
The men's team tallied 25 points, placing seven runners in the top 11 spots and nine points ahead of second place host Fitchburg State. Ana Maria finished third with 89 points and Framingham State came in fourth with 106.
Freshman Kristin Burke (Guilford, Conn.) finished first for the women with a time of 21:45.5. Freshmen Megan Murphy (Spokane, Wash.) and Christie Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine) finished second and third with times of 22:09.6 and 22:33.2, respectively. Rounding out the top five finishers was junior Ashley Couch (Schenectady, N.Y.) who ran a time of 22:41.9 and senior Emily Capurso (Longmeadow, Mass.) with a time of 22:48.2.
Newcomer Bryan Smerkers (Shenendowa, N.Y.) was the top finisher for Holy Cross in third place with a time of 26:12.9. Sophomore Bernard Ozarowski (Princeton, N.J.) followed in fourth with a time of 26:27.3. Freshman Michael Shaw (West Chatham , Mass.) rounded out the top five meet finishers finishing with a time of 26:36.2.
Freshman Meghan Lytel (Lewiston, N.Y.) finished in the six spot with a time of 22:59.0, while teammate Michela Byrne (Portland, Ore.) came in seventh at 23:31.4. Junior Kelly Byrnes (Holmdel, N.J.) and freshman Stephanie Cares (Northboro, Mass.) rounded out the top ten, placing eighth with a time of 23:34.2 and 10th with a time of 23:59.1, respectively.
Veteran James McKeon (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) came in at No. 9 for the Crusaders with a time of 27:42.3. Junior Stephen Zolotas (Peabody , Mass.) and Patrick Clifford (Haworth, N.J.) finished 10th and 11th, respectively, with times of 27:57.5 and 28:48.3
The Crusaders return to action when they travel to Orono , Maine for the Murray Keatinge Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 2.
