Cross Country Teams Run at New England Championship

Boston, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's and women's cross country teams took to the course again Saturday in Boston, Mass. for the New England Championship. The Crusader men were led to the line by two freshmen. Crossing first was Timothy Richard (Enid, OH) followed by Kyle Rougeot (Torrington, Conn.). Richard ran the five mile course in 26:36, missing his career best by only one second. Rougeot surpassed his personal best by 11 seconds, crossing the line in 26:48. The women were led by a pair of sophomores; Colleen Spilka (Hamden, Conn.) and Elizabeth Alizzi (Syossett, N.Y.). Spilka led the Crusaders across the line for the second week in a row, finishing in 19:05 on the 5K course. Alizzi covered the 3.1 miles in 19:14.

Richard and Rougeot were trailed closely by sophomore Brad Mish (Hadley, Mass.) and freshman Garrett Huddy (Pataskala, OH). Mish covered the course in 26:56, one second of his career best, while Huddy would run the five miles in 27:07. Sophomore Sebastian Fidelus (Jersey City, N.J.) would also have a strong run, crossing the line in 27:11. Seniors John Ortolani (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Stephen Kress (Portland, Maine) would rround out the field of Crusaders, finishing in 27:24 and 27:37, respectively.

On the 5K course, freshman Margaret Fox (Natick, Mass) would break the 20-minute mark, covering the course in 19:52. Another freshman, Sarah Croteau (Westminster, Mass.), would be the next Crusader to cross the line, finishing in 20:01. Senior Megan Hyland (Rye, N.Y.) was right on Croteau's heels, finishing in 20:12. Rounding out the entries for Holy Cross were junior Katie O'Gorman (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Alexandra Swiatocha (Mahopac, N.Y.). O'Gorman would run the course in 20:27. Swiatocha finished in 20:32.

The Holy Cross men's team took 32nd place in the field of 45 teams with a total of 914 points. UMass Lowell won the meet with 76 points. The women's team took 30th place out of 46 teams with 741 points. Boston College won on the 5K course with a total of 126 points.

Both Cross Country teams are back on the course Saturday, October 14 for the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. Race time is scheduled for 11:00AM.
