NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Holy Cross men's and women's cross country teams both had stellar showings at the 2008 Blue Devil Invitational, with the men finishing first out of four schools with 30 points, and the women coming in first out of five schools with 36 points. Junior Kyle Rougeot (Torrington, Conn.) led the men's team by finishing in third place with a time of 26:50, while freshman Paige Sutherland (Groveland, Mass.) finished second with a time of 18:48 to lead the women. This is the second year in a row the men won first place while the women improve on last year's second place finish.
For the Holy Cross women, Sutherland was followed by senior Alexandra Swiatocha (Mahopac, N.Y.) who finished third with a time of 18:49, only one second slower than the second place finish. Senior tri-captain Colleen Spilka (Hamden, Conn.) was next for the Crusaders finishing in sixth place (19:01), followed by Elizabeth Humphries (Siler City, N.C.) in 11th place (19:26), Sarah Croteau (Westminster, Mass.) in 14th place (19:35) and Claire Luke (Delmar, N.Y.) in 16th place (19:40). On the men's side, Rougeot was followed by junior Tim Richard (Attleboro, Mass.) in fourth place (27:42), senior captain Brad Mish (Hadley, Mass.) in fifth place (27:54), freshman Cory Loftis (Branford, Conn.) in sixth place (28:06) and junior Garrett Huddy (Columbus, Ohio) in 12th place (28:33).
The Crusaders will return to action on Friday, September 19, when they take part in the National Catholic Championship in Notre Dame, Ind.
