Women's Cross Country Takes Sixth At National Catholic Championship

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The women's cross country team placed sixth of 11 teams at the National Catholic Championship on Friday afternoon, hosted by Notre Dame. Senior Emily Hughes (Milton, Mass.) led the Crusaders with a 22nd place finish of 91 runners with a time of 18:23.40 on the 5K course.

All eight runners for the women's team finished in the top two-thirds of the field. Sophomore Caroline Carley (Barrington, Ill.) finished behind Hughes with a 27th place finish and time of 18:36.80. Senior Amanda Waldron (Walpole, Mass.) also posted a top-third result, finishing 30th with a time of 18:39.10. Freshman Mary Welsh (Manhasset, N.Y.) was the top rookie finisher for Holy Cross, crossing the finish line in 32nd place at 18:42.20.

Freshman Rachel Sowinski (Mountain Top, Pa.) (42nd, 19:00.40), senior Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.H.) (44th, 19:04.60), junior Abigail Mitchell (Manchester, N.H.) (55th, 19:21.10) and freshman Caroline Carr (Ridgefield, Conn.) (60th, 19:29.20) rounded out the Crusader field that traveled to South Bend.

Select members of the women's cross country team will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 21, at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational at 10:30 a.m.
