MADISON, Conn. – Select members of the Holy Cross men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Hammonasset Beach State Park to compete in the 2012 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on Friday afternoon. Junior Emily Hughes (Milton, Mass.) led the women's team while sophomore John Cicchitti (Warminster, Pa.) took the top Crusader finish for the men against the top competition in the northeast.
Hughes finished 120th out of 252 runners with a time of 22:20.6. Fellow classmate Amanda Waldron (Walpole, Mass.) finished behind Hughes with a time of 22:52.4. Three other runners represented Holy Cross including freshman Caroline Carley (Barrington, Ill.), junior Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.H.) and sophomore Abigail Mitchell (Manchester, N.H.), finishing with times of 23:07.3, 23:29.2 and 24:06.9, respectively. Providence won the team title with 46 points while Abbey D'Agostino from Dartmouth led the field across the finish line with a time of 19:51.1.
On the men's side, Cicchitti finished 139th of 239 runners with a time of 32:53.1. Freshman Francisco Tejidor (Coral Gables, Fla.) was the top rookie finisher and took second on the team with a time of 33:26.0. Freshman Dennis Muldoon (Weymouth, Mass.) and juniors Greg Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Dylan Villescas (Las Cruces, N.M.) rounded out the Crusader field with times of 33:41.5, 33:47.0 and 34:22.3, respectively. Iona won the team title with 45 points including the top overall finisher, Mitch Goose, with a pace of 30:04.5.
Select members of the men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the final meets of the season on Nov. 17. The women will race in the ECAC Championship while the men will run in the IC4A Championship. Each are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. in Bronx, N.Y.
