NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Holy Cross women's cross country team opened up the 2011 season by placing second at the Blue Devil Invitational, held at Central Connecticut State University. Senior Paige Sutherland (Groveland, Mass.) was the top finisher for the Crusaders, placing eighth in a time of 18:17. Connecticut won the meet with 15 points, followed by Holy Cross (54 points), Central Connecticut (79 points), New Haven (118 points) and Southern Connecticut (120 points).
Following Sutherland, sophomore Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.H.) came in 11th (18:48) and sophomore Emily Hughes (Milton, Mass.) was 12th (18:49). Sophomore Amanda Waldron (Walpole, Mass.) and senior Sarah Mellea (North Arlington, N.J.) also had top 20 finishes for the Crusaders, with Waldron placing 15th (19:07) and Mellea coming in 17th (19:18).
Holy Cross returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 10, when it takes part in the Bryant Invitational at 10:00 a.m.
