Volleyball Defeated By Bucknell, 3-0

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Bucknell, 3-0, by scores of 30-25, 30-17 and 30-16 in the season-finale on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Crusaders finish the season with a 4-24 overall record (1-13 Patriot League), while the Bison finish 12-17 overall (5-9 Patriot League).

Senior Christine Strawson (Torrington, Conn.) and sophomore Liz Auger (Barnstable, Mass.) each had six kills, while junior Molly Anderson (Weston, Conn.) led the team with 14 digs. Freshman setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded 19 assists.

The Bison were led by Emilie Hardinge's 10 kills and Shannon Pitsch's 20 assists. Allison Gittings had 12 assists and Jenna Henderson had nine kills.

For the season, Strawson's 4.00 kills per game rank fourth all-time at Holy Cross for a single-season, while her 316 kills rank fifth. Anderson's 3.72 digs per game put her third all-time in a single-season, while her 350 digs are fifth. O'Donnell's 891 assists are ranked second all-time in a single-season and her 9.48 assists per game are third.

Before the match, seniors Katie Fitzpatrick (Queensbury, N.Y.), Meagan Merinder (Andover, Mass.) and Strawson were honored for their hard work and dedication to the team on and off the court over the past four years.

Fitzpatrick has been outstanding on the court and in the class room. This season she had a career-best 34 service aces. Fitzpatrick has also achieved great success academically as a Math major as she has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in every season and was recently named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team.

Merinder has been an extremely determined player as demonstrated by her playing in every single game for the Crusaders over the last three seasons. As a middle hitter Merinder has led the team in blocks in the past three seasons, including this year with 51. As a junior Merinder also led the team in service aces with 34. This season she has set a career best in digs with 70 and kills with 129.

Strawson will graduate as one of the greatest volleyball players in the history of Holy Cross. Earlier this season she set the Holy Cross all-time record for career kills as she has 1,246. This season she recorded double-digit kills in 19 matches with 10 double-doubles. Strawson was a member of the 2005 and 2006 all-Patriot League second team, while she made an incredible eight-straight regular season all-tournament teams. Strawson has been just as amazing in the class room as a Biology major. She is a two-time Patriot League Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year and has made the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in every season. Strawson is also a three-time member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team with two straight appearances on the first team. Strawson is an outstanding leader as she is a two-time team captain.
