Holy Cross Volleyball Tops Navy In Five-Game Thriller

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Christine Strawson (Torrington, Conn.) recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 20 kills and 15 digs as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Navy in five games, by scores of 18-30, 30-23, 19-30, 30-28 and 16-14, on Friday night in Patriot League action at the Holy Cross Field House. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 4-17 overall (2-8 Patriot League), while the Mids fall to 11-15 overall (3-7 Patriot League). Strawson is now ranked second in career kills at Holy Cross with 883 and her 316 kills this season are currently the fourth best in a single-season.
The Crusaders tied the match for the second time when they won the fourth game by a score of 30-28. In the fifth game, the Mids got off to a 6-3 lead before the Crusaders won six straight points to take a 9-6 advantage. Holy Cross kept its lead until Navy tied the game at 13-13, and after each team won a point, Holy Cross senior Valerie Mora (San Antonio, Texas) recorded her fifth kill of the match to give the Crusaders a 15-14 lead. Then junior Meagan Merinder (Andover, Mass.) clinched the victory with a service ace.
Senior setter Chrissy Fanning (East Amherst, N.Y.) registered her seventh double-double of the season with 43 assists and 17 digs. Fanning now has 1,561 career assists which is good for third all-time in school history.
Freshman Liz Auger (Barnstable, Mass.) tied her career high with 18 kills, while sophomore libero Molly Anderson (Weston, Conn.) was outstanding on defense to lead all players with 29 digs. Mora was also solid on defense with 13 digs.
Navy was led by Jessie Sims' 27 kills and 23 digs, while Kim Koss had 63 assists.
The Crusaders return to the court on Saturday, October 28, when they host American on Senior Day in the final home match of the season. The contest will start at 4:00 p.m. at the Holy Cross Field House.
