Volleyball Defeated At Bucknell 3-1

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Holy Cross freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) tallied her seventh career double-double, but the Crusaders were defeated by Bucknell, 3-1, in Patriot League volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Davis Gym by scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-19 and 25-21. With the win the Bison improve to 9-12 overall and 2-9 in the conference, while Holy Cross fell to 7-16 on the season and 2-9 in the Patriot League.

McKernan registered the only double-double of the match with 28 assists and 12 digs. Senior Alex Aycock (Jonesboro, Ark.) led the Crusaders with 13 kills, while freshman Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) recorded 11 kills. Freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) tallied a match-best 20 digs.

Bucknell was led by Rose Lewis, who had a match-best 32 assists and four service aces, while Keane Brazda set up 16 assists. Jessica Serrato (14), Jordan Walker (11) and Erika Eastley (10) all had double digit kills, while Katie Price led the Bison with 19 digs.

In the first set, Holy Cross jumped ahead early, 7-2. The Crusaders kept the five-point lead (10-5), but Bucknell cut the deficit to 16-15. Holy Cross went ahead by four points (21-17), but Bucknell tied the set at 21-21. After the teams traded points to make the score 22-22, Bucknell rallied and outscored HC 3-1 to claim the first set, 25-23. In the second set, Bucknell jumped ahead 10-5 to begin the set. The Bison kept the five-point lead (14-9), but Holy Cross rallied back to tie the match at 16-16. With the match tied at 20-20, the Crusaders used a 4-1 rally to claim the second set, 25-21.

In the third set, Bucknell went ahead 12-6 to start the set, but Holy Cross scored four straight points to cut the deficit to 12-10. The Bison put together a 9-4 rally to gain the 21-14 lead. Bucknell kept the lead for the remainder of the set as it would go on to claim the 25-19 win in the third set. With the match tied at 5-5 in the fourth set, Bucknell used a 4-1 run to gain the 10-6 lead. The Bison kept a four point edge (18-14), but the Crusaders rallied to tie the match at 18-18. After the teams traded points to make the set 19-19, Bucknell scored three in a row to earn the 22-19 lead. The Bison outscored HC 3-2 to claim the match victory with a 25-21 win in the fourth set.

Holy Cross returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 3, when it will host Colgate at 2:00 p.m.
