BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Jade Van Streepen and Amanda Clark led the Mountain Hawks with eight kills apiece as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Lehigh, 3-0, on Friday evening in Patriot League action at Leeman-Turner Arena by scores of 25-10, 25-14 and 25-18. The Crusaders fall to 7-15 overall and 2-8 in the Patriot League, while the Mountain Hawks improve to 16-6 on the season and 7-3 in the conference.
Junior Kamele Shizuru (Kailua, Hawaii) led the Crusaders with six kills, while freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) posted 16 assists. Freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) totaled a match-best 11 digs.
Amy Matula led Lehigh with 26 assists, while Dana Raber and Claire Bradshaw had six digs each.
In the first set, both teams battled back and forth as Lehigh held the 10-7 edge. The Mountain Hawks, however, strung together a rally and outscored the Crusaders 15-3 to claim the 25-10 first set victory. In the second set, Holy Cross held the 5-4 edge, but Lehigh put together an 11-2 run to grab the 15-7 lead. The Crusaders scored three straight points to make the score 15-10, but the Mountain Hawks doubled up Holy Cross 10-5 to claim the 25-15 win. With the score tied at 7-7 in the third set, Lehigh scored nine straight points to gain the 16-7 lead. The Crusaders responded with a 5-1 rally to make the score 17-12, but the Mountain Hawks closed out the set on an 8-6 run to claim the 25-18 set victory.
Holy Cross returns to action tomorrow, October 26, when it will travel to Bucknell for a 5:00 p.m. match.
