Volleyball Falls To Army 3-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) posted her sixth double-double this season, but Holy Cross fell to the Army Black Knights 3-0 by scores of 26-24, 25-18 and 25-16 in the Holy Cross Field House on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 7-14 overall (2-7 PL) and the Black Knights advance to 11-8 overall (8-1 PL).

McKernan was the only player in the match to tally a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the team with 11 kills, and McKernan posted eight. Fellow freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) led the team with 14 digs.

Army was led by Vanessa Edwards with 36 assists. Megan Wilton tallied 11 kills for the Black Knights, while teammate D.J. Phee recorded 15 digs.

During the first set, the Crusaders fought hard to keep the match close. Trailing by one with a 11-10 score McKernan aced four serves to take the Crusaders ahead 13-11. She continued her service until the Crusaders led the Black Knights 16-12. The Crusaders stayed ahead until Army tied the game 20-20. Holy Cross led 24-23 toward the end of the set, however Army came out victorious 26-24. The Crusaders started the second set 1-0 on a kill by Welsch. They kept the game within a point, and junior Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) aced a serve to tie the game 4-4. After a Black Knight kill to bring them ahead 5-4, Army held onto the lead the rest of the set. In the third set, the Crusaders tied the score 2-2 and then scored six of the next seven points. This run enabled the team to lead Army by a score of 8-3. Army took a time out to attempt to disrupt the Crusader momentum. After the timeout, the Crusaders scored one of the next three points to keep a 9-5 lead. Army then scored seven points, and never lost the lead eventually winning the set 25-16.

The Crusaders return to action on Friday, Oct. 25 when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. for a match against Lehigh at 7:00 p.m.
