WASHINGTON, D.C. – Allison Cappellino posted a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs for the Eagles as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to American, 3-0, at Bender Arena on Friday night in Patriot League action by scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-16. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 6-9 overall (1-3 PL), while the Eagles improve to 18-1 overall (4-0 PL).
Senior Alex Aycock (Jonesboro, Ark.) led the Crusaders with eight kills, while freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) totaled 15 digs. Junior Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) recorded four aces and freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) tallied 22 assists.
Juliana Crum posted 12 kills and nine digs for the Eagles, while Monika Smidova tallied 35 assists.
With American leading the first set by a 20-16 score, the Eagles won five straight points to secure a 25-16 win. With the Crusaders trailing 21-14 in the second set, Holy Cross won four consecutive points to make it a 21-18 score, but American then took four of the last five points for a 25-19 victory. After taking an 18-15 lead in the third set, the Eagles won seven of the next eight points for the 25-16 match-clinching third-set win.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they travel to Baltimore, Md., to take on Patriot League opponent Loyola (Md.) at 2:00 p.m.
