WORCESTER, Mass. – Kaylynn Genemaras and Jade Van Streepen each tallied nine kills for the Mountain Hawks as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Lehigh, 3-0, at the Holy Cross Field House on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action by scores of 28-26, 25-21 and 25-17. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 6-6 overall (1-1 PL), while the Mountain Hawks improve to 10-4 overall (2-1 PL).
Sophomore Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) led the Crusaders with eight kills, while freshman Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) posted seven kills. Freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) tallied 23 assists and eight digs, while freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) secured 11 digs. Junior Kamele Shizuru (Kailua, Hawaii) led the team with four blocks.
Amy Matula posted 27 assists for Lehigh, while Rachel Charles had a team-best nine digs.
With the Crusaders leading the first set, 24-21, the Mountain Hawks rallied with three straight points to tie the set at 24-24. With the score now tied at 26-26, Lehigh was able to take the next two points for a 28-26 win. With the Crusaders trailing in the second set by a 24-19 score, they won two straight points, but a kill by Amanda Clark gave the Mountain Hawks a 25-21 victory. Lehigh moved out to a 16-6 lead in the third set, but the Crusaders then won nine of the next 12 points to cut the lead to 19-15. But the Mountain Hawks then won six of the next eight points for a 25-17 match-clinching victory.
The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when they host non-conference opponent Central Connecticut at the Holy Cross Field House at 7:00 p.m.
