WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior captain Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) led the Crusaders with nine kills as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Quinnipiac, 3-0, at the Holy Cross Field House on Wednesday night by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-23. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 5-5 overall, while the Bobcats fall to 2-9 overall. The Crusaders' 5-5 record is their best start to a season since going 7-3 in 2001.
Freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) led the team with 18 assists and a .500 hitting percentage. Assisting in the Crusader offense, freshman Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.), sophomore Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) and junior captain Mary-Kate Short (Lighthouse Point, Fla.) each tallied six kills. Junior Julia Gould (Ridgewood, N.J.) led the team's defense with 15 digs while freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) recorded 11.
The Bobcats were led by Emma Ogden's 18 assists and Logan Riker's 12 digs. Ogden also recorded a match-high .667 hitting percentage.
The Crusaders battled the first few points of the first set until they pulled ahead 6-3. They remained ahead until the Bobcats came back to tie the score 10-10. The game remained within two points and came to an end when junior Kamele Shizuru (Kailua, Hawaii) recorded a kill from teammate McKernan to end the game 25-22. With the second set tied 6-6 Quinnipiac committed a service error and Holy Cross took a 7-6 lead. The Crusaders would not lose the lead again in the set and went on to win the game 25-17. During the third set the Bobcats tied the score at 21-21, and continued to tie the score 22-22 and 23-23 when junior Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) tallied a kill to make the score 24-23. Stokes then recorded an ace to win the third set and the match for Holy Cross.
The Crusaders return to action on Friday, Sept. 20, when they start the Patriot League season versus Bucknell at the Holy Cross Field House at 7:00 p.m.
