PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the Crusaders with eight kills but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Eastern Michigan, 3-0, at the Brown Invitational at the Pizzitola Center on Saturday morning by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-21. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-5 overall, while the Eagles improve to 6-4 overall. The Crusaders conclude play at the Brown Invitational in Providence R.I., on Saturday, Sept. 14, when they take on Bryant at 4:30 p.m.
Freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) tallied 16 assists and six kills, while junior Julia Gould (Ridgewood, N.J.) and freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) each recorded 10 digs. Junior captain Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) posted five kills.
The Eagles were led by Paige Roback who just missed a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs. Jill Briner posted 18 assists, while Corynne Smith had 12 digs and Kelsey Jones tallied six blocks.
With the first set tied at 9-9, the Eagles then won 16 of the next 23 points to earn a 25-16 first-set victory. Eastern Michigan then won the second set by a 25-13 score. With the Eagles leading the third set, 21-13, the Crusaders took six straight points to cut the lead to 21-19. But Eastern Michigan was able to win four of the next six points to secure a 25-21 match-clinching win.
