PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Julia Gould (Ridgewood, N.J.) led the Crusaders with 11 digs but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Brown, 3-0, at the Brown Invitational at the Pizzitola Center on Friday night by scores of 25-13, 25-23 and 28-26. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-4 overall, while the Bears improve to 1-4 overall. The Crusaders continue play at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I., on Saturday, Sept. 14, when they take on Eastern Michigan at 10:00 a.m. and Bryant at 4:30 p.m.
The Bears were led by Maddie Lord who tallied 11 kills and Sarah Lucenti who recorded 17 assists. Payton Smith was outstanding at the net with eight blocks.
After dropping the first set by a 25-13 score, the Crusaders then were tied at 19-19 in the second set. The Bears then won three straight points to move out to a 22-19 lead. The Crusaders then won three out of four points to cut the Brown lead to 23-22. But Brown was able to win two of the next three points for a 25-23 win. With the Bears leading the third set, 24-23, the Crusaders tied the match on a kill by Oliver. With Brown now leading 26-25, Sifferlen extended the set with a kill. But after a kill by Smith gave Brown a 27-26 lead, the Bears earned its fourth match point and clinched the victory with blocks by Smith and Maryl Vanden Bos for the 28-26 win.
