Volleyball Defeats Hartford, 3-0

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior Kamele Shizuru (Kailua, Hawaii) tallied a team-best nine kills as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Hartford, 3-0, at the Reich Family Pavilion on Tuesday night by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-22. With the win, the Crusaders have won two straight matches and three of their last four to improve to 3-3 overall, while the Hawks fall to 2-7 overall. This is the Crusaders' first win versus the Hawks since a 3-2 victory on Sept. 6, 2003 as Hartford had won the previous six meetings entering tonight's contest.

Freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) posted 25 assists, while freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) recorded 20 digs. Popp has tallied 20 digs or more in four straight matches. Freshman Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) also posted double-digit digs with 11, while she also totaled six kills. Freshman Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) had eight kills and junior Dana Weston (Canton, Mass.) led the team with four blocks.

The Hawks were led by Corinne Horanzy who tallied seven kills and Jackie Tamburri who posted 22 assists.

The Crusaders won the first set by a 25-17 score as Shizuru tallied three kills and Popp secured 11 digs. Holy Cross took the second set, 25-15, as Welsch led the team with five kills. With the Crusaders leading the third set, 18-12, the Hawks then won eight consecutive points to move out to a 20-18 advantage. With the Hawks now leading, 22-19, the Crusaders won six straight points to earn the match-clinching 25-22 third-set victory. Junior captain Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) led the team with three kills.

The Crusaders return to action at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I., on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14, at the Pizzitola Center. Holy Cross will play Brown on Friday at 7:30 p.m., while on Saturday it will take on Eastern Michigan at 10:00 a.m. and Bryant at 4:30 p.m.
