ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Erin Fortner tallied 13 kills for the Mids as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Navy, 3-0, at the Wesley A. Brown Field House on Friday evening in the Patriot League season opener by scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-13. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-14 overall (0-1 PL), while the Mids improve to 5-8 overall (1-0 PL).
Freshman Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) led the Crusaders with eight kills, while senior captain Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) led the team with 14 digs. Sophomore Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) totaled 12 assists, while senior Callie Black (Fallon, Nev.) and Oliver each posted two blocks.
Alex Karika tallied 43 assists, while Christy Rapp posted 19 digs. Alex Kassel totaled nine kills and led the Mids with six blocks.
Navy won the first set by a 25-19 score as Fortner posted five kills for the set. The Mids took the second set also by a 25-19 score as Katie Sylakowski led Navy with five kills. The Mids clinched the sweep by winning the third set, 25-13. Navy posted a .382 hitting percentage for the set and hit .278 for the match.
The Crusaders return to action when they go to Washington, D.C., to meet American on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Bender Arena at 2:00 p.m.
