SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Three players posted double-digit kills for Akron as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Akron, 3-0, at the Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by Bryant at the Chace Athletic Center on Friday night by scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-18. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-11 overall, while the Zips improve to 6-4 overall. The Crusaders will continue play in the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they will meet Northern Kentucky at 10:00 a.m. and Bryant at 7:00 p.m.
Freshman Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) led the Crusaders with 10 kills, while senior captain Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) posted 17 digs. Junior Christiana Blakeslee (Ashtabula, Ohio) tallied 25 assists and sophomore Mary-Kate Short (Lighthouse Point, Fla.) had two blocks.
Akron was led by Tina Dimitrijevs who posted 15 kills. She also had a .619 hitting percentage. Paiton Twitty tallied 12 kills and a .625 hitting percentage, while Alex Cocklin also posted 12 kills. Morgan Kuhn tallied 46 assists and Jill Paluch had 16 digs.
With the Zips leading 23-18 in the first set, the Crusaders then won five of the next six points to cut Akron's lead to just one point at 24-23. But Chelsey Harvey gave the Zips the 25-23 win with a kill. Akron took 10 of the last 15 points to win the second set by a 25-15 score. With the Zips leading the third set, 24-14, the Crusaders won four straight points but their rally fell short as Akron earned a 25-18 victory to sweep the match.
