WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) and freshman setter Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) each recorded double-doubles but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Fairleigh Dickinson in the first match of the Beanpot Classic at the Holy Cross Field House on Friday, in the season-opener for both teams by scores of 28-26, 13-25, 25-23 and 25-21. With the loss, the Crusaders start the season 0-1 overall, while the Knights kick off the season 1-0 overall. Lynch recorded 14 kills and 12 digs for her 28th career double-double. She now has 827 career kills which are fourth all-time in school history. Stokes was very impressive in her collegiate debut as she posted 32 assists and 15 digs. Senior Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) tallied 10 kills and led the team with four service aces and five blocks. Junior Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) had a strong defensive match as she led the Crusaders with 21 digs. Holy Cross received several outstanding performances by players in their collegiate debuts. Freshman Heather Roberts (San Jose, Calif.) just missed a double-double with nine kills and 17 digs, while freshman Julia Gould (Ridgewood, N.J.) recorded 10 digs as Holy Cross had five players earn double-digit digs. Freshman Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) also had a solid performance with three kills and three digs.
The Knights were led by Meaghan Wheeler who recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs, while Sarah Willey also posted a double-double with 21 assists and 14 digs. Chelsea Braga also added a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. Kelsey Semler led the team with 27 digs.
