WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Rebecca DeSanti (Hampden, Mass.) recorded 16 kills, senior setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded 53 assists and senior Angela Chisholm (Millis, Mass.) tallied 17 digs as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Navy, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Holy Cross Field House by scores of 25-12, 23-25, 25-18, 23-25 and 15-13, in Patriot League action. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 12-19 overall (4-8 Patriot League), while the Midshipmen fall to 7-21 overall (1-11 Patriot League). The Crusaders' 12 wins are their most since they went 12-16 in the 2000 season. Also their four Patriot League victories are their most since they went 6-8 in 2004.
O'Donnell now has 1,035 assists this season as she is only the second Crusader to tally 1,000 assists in a season as Ellen Pinkowski had 1,126 in 1991. Chisholm now has 414 digs this season which are third all-time at Holy Cross as she is now only the second Crusader to record 400 digs in a season. Katie Lynch reached 400 digs twice as she had 430 in 1999 and 416 in 1998. Sophomore Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) also had an outstanding match as she tallied her 19th double-double of the season and the 26th of her career with 18 kills and 17 digs. Lynch, who holds the Holy Cross single-season kills record as she now 421 this season, has 370 digs this year which are ranked fourth all-time. Junior Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) recorded 10 kills, while freshman Christiana Blakeslee (Ashtabula, Ohio) added seven kills.
Navy was led by Veronica Ffrench who tallied 17 kills, while Jenny Rudewicz recorded 24 assists. Holly Berger led the team with 23 digs, while Ndidi Ibe was strong at the net with a team-best seven blocks. Kelsey Owen recorded 13 digs.
The Crusaders controlled the first set as they had a lead as big as 14 points at 24-10. With the score 24-12, Colpoys recorded a kill for the 25-12 victory. DeSanti was outstanding with five kills in the set to lead Holy Cross. After the Mids took the second set by a 25-23 score, the Crusaders answered with a 25-18 win in the third set. DeSanti was once again very impressive as she tallied five kills to lead the Crusaders. With the fourth set tied at 23-23, Navy won the next two points including Ffrench's kill on set point to earn a 25-23 win and force a fifth and deciding set. With Navy leading the final set by a 10-6 score, the Crusaders then won six straight points to take a 12-10 advantage. With the score now tied at 13-13, Lynch recorded two consecutive kills to clinch the set and the match. Holy Cross is 4-4 in five-setters this season. The Crusaders also conclude their home schedule with an 8-7 record.
The Crusaders return to action on Friday, Nov. 12, when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to play a Patriot League match versus Bucknell at 7:00 p.m. Holy Cross then concludes the season when it travels to Hamilton, N.Y., to take on Colgate on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 3:00 p.m.
Before today's match, seniors Chisholm, DeSanti, Kate Ginsbach (Hot Springs, S.D.) and O'Donnell were honored for their dedication to the team-on and off the court-over the past four years.
Chisholm has had an outstanding career. As a two-time team captain, Chisholm has demonstrated her strong leadership abilities and her passion for the team. She is also one of the best defensive players in the history of Holy Cross volleyball as she is only the fifth Crusader to record 1,000 career digs as her 1,127 career digs are ranked fourth all-time at Holy Cross. This season she leads the team with 414 digs which are ranked first in the Patriot League. Her 414 digs this season are a career best and are third all-time at Holy Cross. As a junior, Chisholm ranked fourth in the Patriot League with 360 digs. Chisholm is a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and is a two-time member of the executive board of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
DeSanti has had a career season as a senior. Her 148 kills, 110 digs and 17 aces this season are all the best for her career. As a junior, DeSanti reached double-digit kills with 101. For her career she has 324 kills. DeSanti has also been successful in the classroom as she is a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Ginsbach has been a key contributor to the Holy Cross volleyball program as a player and as a team manager. After playing on the team as a sophomore she missed her junior season due to an injury. Ginsbach then showed her dedication to the team by serving as a team manager this season.
O'Donnell is one of the greatest players in the history of the program. As a four-year starter and two-time captain, O'Donnell has demonstrated her love of the sport and has left everything on the court. O'Donnell is all over the all-time Holy Cross record book including holding the all-time record for career assists with 3,413. She also has three of the top five best single-season assist totals at Holy Cross including a career-best 1,035 assists this year which lead the Patriot League and are second all-time at Holy Cross. O'Donnell has 119 career aces which are tied for third all-time at Holy Cross, while she has 876 career digs which are seventh all-time at the school. O'Donnell also has 31 career double-doubles. O'Donnell has been named to four regular season all-tournament teams during her career. She is also a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
