CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Holy Cross men's and women's outdoor track & field teams have been picked to finish eighth in the 2006 Patriot League in a poll voted on by head coaches and sports information directors, as announced by the league office on Friday.
At the top of the standings on the men's side, 14-time defending champion Army was chosen to win the Patriot League Championship with a total of 97 points and 13 first-place votes. Navy received three first-place votes, finishing second overall with 87 points. American rounded out the top three with 68 points.
Lehigh was fourth with 53 points as Lafayette took fifth with 52. Bucknell (50) and Colgate (27) took sixth and seventh, respectively. The Crusaders received 14 points in eighth place.
On the women's side, Bucknell was chosen as the favorite with 96 points overall and 13 first-place votes. The Bison will look to pick up their third overall outdoor track & field title. Navy and Army tied for second, each receiving 81 points. The Mids got two first-place votes as the Black Knights picked up one.
Lafayette was chosen fourth with 55 points, while Lehigh pick up 49 votes. American (43) took sixth and Colgate (29) took seventh. Holy Cross finished eighth with 14 points.
The Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championship will be held May 5-6 at Holy Cross on the Hart Center Track and Field complex.
The Crusaders will kick off their season on Saturday, March 25 at the Northeastern Snowflake classic. Both the men and women will begin competition at 10:00 a.m. in Boston.
