Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's track and field team hosted their first home meet of the season on Saturday, taking third out of four teams. Sophomore Katherine Clifford (Norwood, Mass.) took first place in the discus with a throw of 40.81m (133 ft. 11 inches). Her throw beat the qualifying standard for the New England Championship, which takes place the second weekend in May. Clifford took third place in the hammer throw with a toss of 44.08m (144-07). Taking fourth place in that event was sophomore Sarah Murphy (Auburn, Mass.) who threw 42.42m (139-02). Sophomore Christie LeTarte (Lunenburg, Mass.) threw a distance of 39.71m (130-03) to take fifth place.
In the long jump, freshman Olivia Pruszko (Monroe, Conn.) jumped 5.19m to take fourth place in the event. Teammate, junior Lynn Barowski (Merrimack, N.H.) placed sixth with a jump of 5.02m. Freshman Rachel Amaral (Raynham, Mass.) placed second in the shot put, throwing 11.56m. Freshman Chantal Couture (Taunton, Mass.) placed fourth in that event with a throw of 10.16m. Amaral also placed third in the discus with a throw of 37.68m. Sophomore Alexandra Swiatocha (Mahopac, N.Y.) threw 35.13m in the javelin to take third place. Sophomore Jenna Hinchey (Orange, Conn.) placed fourth in that event with a throw of 35.10m as Couture took fifth with a throw of 34.86m. Pruszko placed fourth in the high jump with a jump of 1.60m (5 feet 3 inches).
On the track, freshman Claire Luke (Delmar, N.Y.) placed fourth in the steeplechase with a time of 12:07.91 (3000m). Sophomore Katie Clay (Beverly, Mass.) placed second in the 1500m run with a time of 4:53.92. Pruszko placed third in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.47 seconds, qualifying for the New England Championship. Sophomores Lauren Tallon (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Lauren Courtney (Ashland, Mass.) both beat the qualifying standard for the New England Championship in the 400m run. Tallon took fourth place with a time of 58.18 seconds as Courtney took fifth, covering the distance in 58.57 seconds. Freshman Nicole Lonczak (Melrose, N.Y.) took third in the 400m hurdles, crossing the line in 1:08.08. Sophomore Elizabeth Alizzi (Syosset, N.Y.) placed fourth in the 5000m run, covering the distance in 19:05.40.
Holy Cross took third place on the day with 163 points. Hartford took fourth place with 68 points. URI was the winner of the meet with 230 points on the day. Maine came in second with 171 points.
The Crusaders will travel to Brown University in Providence, R.I. for the Brown Springtime Invitational on Sunday, April 49. The meet is scheduled to start at 10:00 AM
