WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's track and field team was victorious in their home track meet on Saturday afternoon. The Crusader women defeated six other teams and picked up their first ever victory over Maine.
Winning one relay events and three individual events, the Crusader women totaled 246 point to edged Maine by 17 points overall. RPI took third with 77 points as Hartford finished fourth with 58 points. CCSU and Assumption rounded out the field in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
The Holy Cross 4x400-meter relay team took first overall with a time of 4:07.25 to defeat CCSU and pick up 10 points. Members of the team are freshman Lauren Courtney (Ashland, Mass.), senior Emily Winacoo (Holden, Mass.), freshman Sophia Grammenos (Gardner, Mass.), and sophomore Katie Spinelli (Southington, Conn.).
Freshman Lesley Bautista (St. John's, NL) won the women's pole vault with a clearance of 10'5.5" as she tied with teammate Jessica Fallon (Nashua, N.H.) and Shira Panelli of Maine, but won a tiebreaker.
Also victorious on the day was junior Eileen Geoghegan (Merrimac, Mass.) in the javelin throw. The junior won with a toss of 118'0" to narrowly defeat teammate Katherine Clifford (Norwood, Mass.), who threw a distance of 115'9". Clifford also finished second overall in the discus with a throw of 120'7".
The third individual victory for the Holy Cross women came from freshman Alexandra Swiatocha (Mahopac, N.Y.) in the 400-meter hurdles. Swiatocha, who recently took second in the Holy Cross heptathlon, won the hurdles with a season best time of 1:06.94.
Coming in second place in the women's 400-meter run was Lauren Courtney in a time of 1:00.00. Winacoo took fourth in the event. Courtney also finished third with a season best time of 27.41 in the 200-meter dash.
Sophomore Lynn Barowski (Merrimack, N.H.) set a personal record with her second place finish in the long jump with a distance of 17'0.5".
Freshman Danielle Meder (Chicopee, Mass.) took third overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.67. Sophomore Christine Carifio (Haverhill, Mass.) finished third with a time of 2:22.69 in the 800-meter run.
Notes: Freshman Katie Clay (Beverly, Mass.) ran a season best time of 5:00.06 in the 1500-meter run to take third overall ... In the women's hammer throw, senior Rebecca Cole (Barrington, R.I.) took third (150'9") and freshman Lauren Flannery (Franklin, Mass.) finished fifth (121'3"). Both throws were personal bests ... Senior Meredith Johnson (St. Albans, Vt.) ran a personal record time of 15.97 in the 100-meter hurdles ... Freshman Elizabeth Alizzi (Syosset, N.Y.) ran a personal best time of 19:17.51 in the 5000-meter run to take third.
The Holy Cross women's team will be back in action this week at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. Three days of events will begin on Thursday, April 27 at 10:00 a.m.
