Boston, Mass - The Holy Cross Track and Field teams started their 2007 spring season at the Northeastern Spring Open, hosted by Northeastern University in Dedham, Mass. on Saturday. Sophomore Dannielle Meder (Chicopee, Mass.) made an immediate impact, qualifying herself for the New England Championship in her first event of the spring. She ran the 100-meter hurdles in 15.02, beating the qualifying standard by nearly a second. In the 10,000-meter distance event sophomore Elizabeth Alizzi (Syosset, N.Y.) crossed the line in 39:42.12, a time fast enough to be eligible to compete at New Englands. Sophomore Brad Mish (Hadley, Mass.) also qualified for the New England Championship with a run in the men's 10,000 meter race. His time of 32:36.61 was fast enough to take tenth place in the event.
Freshman Claire Luke (Delmar, N.Y.) gave the Crusaders their only event win on the day, running the 3000-meter steeplechase in 12:09.31. Her closest competitor, a runner from Rhode Island, finished over three seconds behind her, giving Luke the clear win of the event.
Freshman Tiffany Reid (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. ) took tenth place in the women's 100-meter dash, finishing in 13.16 seconds. In the 800-meter run, a pair of Crusaders broke into the top ten. Sophomore Lauren Courtney (Ashland, Mass.) and freshman Maureen Meagher (Allentown, Pa.) took ninth and tenth places, respectively. Courtney crossed the line in 2:25.42 as Meagher was right on her heels, finishing in 2:25.48.
Meder competed in two other running events on the day: the 400-meter hurdles and the 4x100-meter relay. Meder ran the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.03, earning herself fourth place. Her time narrowly missed qualifying for New Englands for her second event of the spring. In the 4x100-meter relay, the Holy Cross entry of sophomore Lauren Tallon (Lake Forest, Ill.), Reid, sophomore Lesley Bautista (St. John's, NL. Canada) and Meder took third place, combining for a time of 49.98 seconds.
Bautista cleared a height of 3.35m (10-11.75) to take second in the pole vault. Freshman Olivia Pruszko (Monroe, Conn.) placed fourth in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.57m (5-01.75). Meder jumped a distance of 4.97m (16-03.75), taking seventh place. Senior Kerilyn Anderson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) placed tenth in the event with a jump of 4.76m (15-07.50). Freshman Rachel Amaral (Raynham, Mass.) threw a distance of 10.87m in the shot put, placing tenth. Teammate freshman Chantal Couture (Taunton, Mass.) placed 11th in the shot put with a throw of 10.51m.
Sophomore Katherine Clifford (Norwood, Mass.) took fourth in the discus event. She threw a distance of 36.79m. Amaral took ninth in the event, throwing 33.26m. Clifford and teammate sophomore Sarah Murphy (Auburn, Mass.) took seventh and eighth in the hammer throw, throwing 40.62m and 39.22m, respectively. Couture placed sixth in the javelin as senior Eileen Geohegan (Merrimac, Mass.) took tenth. Couture threw 36.67m and Geohegan threw 35.82m.
In the first men's event of the spring, sophomore Andrew Maggio (Chelmsford, Mass.) took a fourth place finish in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 11.30 seconds. Freshman Kyle Rougeot (Torrington, Conn.) tied for third in the 5000-meter run, covering the distance in 15:35.11. Sophomore Stephen Schoenberger (North Hampton, N.H.) placed fifth in the men's 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2:02.08.
Senior Christopher Bier (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) took sixth place in the 400-meter hurdles. Bier's time was 59.38. Sophomore Robert Farrelly (East Northport, N.Y.) took second place in the 3000-meter steeplechase. He covered the distance in 10:45.23.
In the field events, junior Kevin Dowd (Broad Brook, Conn.) and junior Patrick McGuire (Franklin, Mass.) placed fourth and fifth in the triple jump. Dowd jumped 12.23m as McGuire jumped 11.94m. Sophomore Jonathan Medeiros (New Bedford, Mass.) placed in the top ten in two events: the shot put and the discus. In the shot put, Medeiros threw 13.67m placing sixth. In the discus, he threw a distance of 42.18m.
Senior Nicholas Carr (Concord, Mass.) placed third in the hammer throw. His throw of 50.75m edged out a competitor from Brown. Junior Nathaniel Couture (Taunton, Mass.) placed third in the javelin throw with a toss of 56.63m.
The Holy Cross track and field teams travel to Amherst, Mass. to take on UMass on Saturday, March 31. Events are scheduled to start at 10:00 am.
