DEDHAM, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's and women's outdoor track and field teams got off to a solid start to their spring season at the Northeastern Snowflake Classic on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Nathaniel Couture (Taunton, Mass.) was victorious in the men's javelin throw and junior Kaitlyn Mearn (Milton, Mass.) took first in the women's 100-meter dash.
Mearn finished the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.71, narrowly edging her teammate, freshman Lesley Bautista (St. Johns, NL) by one-hundredth of a second. Mearn also took eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.48 and Bautista finished third in the pole vault with a throw of 10'3".
The Holy Cross women's 4x100-meter team also got a win with a time of 51.85 just ahead of Northeastern.
Sophomore Lynn Barowski (Merrimack, N.H.) had a solid showing in the women's long jump, taking third place with a distance of 14'11.50". Junior Eileen Geoghegan (Merrimac, Mass.) also had a third place finish with a toss of 35.27 meters in the javelin.
Senior Meredith Johnson (St. Albans, Vt.) took fourth in the women's 400-meter hurdles with at time of 1:09.70.
On the men's side, Couture led the way with his win in the javelin with a throw of 55.21 meters.
Senior captain Daniel Ryan (East Hempstead, N.H.) cleared a height of 5'10" in the high jump to finished third overall. Fellow senior Thomas Severo (Westford, Mass.) also had a third place finish, with a time of 2:02.52 in the men's 800-meter event.
The freshman tandem of Andrew Maggio (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Brad Mish (Hadley, Mass.) also had third place showings of their own. Maggio took third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.77 and Mish ran to third in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 33.30.47.
The men's 4x100-meter team took third overall, finishing in a time of 43.53.
Next week the Crusader women will be competing at the Worcester City Meet at WPI on Saturday, April 1 beginning at 10:00 a.m. The men will travel to New Haven, Conn. to take on the field at the Southern Connecticut State Invitational. Also on Saturday, April 1, the event will being at 11:00 a.m.
