Women's Track & Field Competes at Valentine Invitational

Boston, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's indoor track and field team traveled to Boston University to compete in the annual Valentine Invitational on Saturday. In the 400-meter run, sophomore Lauren Courtney (Ashland, Mass.) crossed the line in 58.31, qualifying her for the New England Championship. Courtney's time set a new Holy Cross record. The previous record was 58.41. Also qualifying for New England's: sophomore Lesley Bautista (St. John's, NL, Canada). She cleared a height of 3.41m in the pole vault, higher than necessary to compete at the New England Championship.

Courtney was the highest placing Crusader in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 26.73. Sophomore Lauren Tallon (Lake Forest, Ill.) finished in 27.31 as teammates senior Kaitlyn Mearn (Milton, Mass.) and junior Katie Spinelli (Southington, Conn.) finished in 27.96 and 28.03, respectively. As Courtney beat the qualifying time in the 400-meter run, Tallon finished the event in 59.71.

Sophomore Sophia Grammenos (Gardner, Mass.) took 15th in the 500-meter run, finishing in 1:20.20, missing the New England Championship qualifying mark by .20. Sophomore Katie Clay (Beverly, Mass.) ran the mile in 5:17.76 as freshman Maggie Fox (Natick, Mass.) ran the event in 5:28.52. Sophomore Courtney Mazzio (West Chester, Pa.) ran the 800-meter in 2:21.31 as junior Christine Carifio (Haverhill, Mass.) ran the event in 2:22.01.

Sophomore Colleen Spilka (Hamden, Conn.) and senior Megan Hyland (Rye, N.Y.) placed 43rd and 44th in the 1000-meter run. Spilka covered the distance in 3:08.58 as Hyland was right behind her with a time of 3:08.91. In the 3000-meter run, sophomore Elizabeth Alizzi (Syosset, N.Y.) finished in 10:45.30 and in 66th place. Freshman Claire Luke (Delmar, N.Y.) finished the event in 10:54.49 and in 77th place.

In the field events, junior Amanda Dupuis (East Sandwich, Mass.) took 14th in the high jump with a jump of 1.58m. Sophomore Dannielle Meder (Chicopee, Mass.) jumped 4.89m in the long jump as teammate junior Lynn Barowski (Merrimack, N.H.) went 4.70m. Meder also jumped 10.15m in the triple jump.

Freshman Rachel Amaral (Raynham, Mass.) was the highest placing Crusader in two events: the shot put and the weight throw. She threw a distance of 11.11m in the shot put and 13.29m in the weight throw. Freshman Chantal Couture (Taunton, Mass.) threw a distance of 9.88m in the shot put. Sophomore Katherine Clifford (Norwood, Mass.) threw a distance of 12.14m in the weight throw.

The Holy Cross women's indoor track and field team heads to Army in West Point, N.Y. to compete in the 2007 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship. The three-day meet starts on Friday, February 16 at 12:00 pm. Events start at 8:45 am on Saturday and 10:00 am on Sunday.
