Indoor Track and Field Competes at Yale

New Haven, Conn. - The Holy Cross Indoor Track and Field teams traveled to New Haven, Conn. to compete in the Yale Collegiate Track Classic on Saturday. The Crusaders competed in a total of 18 events on the day; the women in 15 and the men in three events. There were no final scores at the annual event, but a number of Crusaders broke into the top ten in select events. Sophomore Danielle Meder (Chicopee, Mass.) finished fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.43, making her the highest finishing Crusader on the day. Freshman Kyle Rougeot (Torrington, Conn.) ran the mile in 4:30.80, taking fifth spot in the event. .

Freshman Rachel Amaral (Raynham, Mass.) finished sixth in the women's shot put, throwing a distance of 11.49m. Freshman Chantal Couture (Taunton, Mass.) also finished in the top ten with a final distance of 10.32m in the shot put. Junior Lynn Barowski (Merrimack, N.H.) jumped 5.10m to land herself in sixth place in the women's long jump. Junior Amanda Dupuis (East Sandwich, Mass.) earned a sixth place finish in the triple jump, jumping 9.82m. Sophomore Katherine Clifford (Norwood, Mass.) took eighth in the weight throw, throwing a distance of 12.92m. Sophomore Laura Flannery (Franklin, Mass.) took tenth in the event, throwing 12.43m. Amaral was 11th with a final distance of 12.37m and sophomore Sarah Murphy (Auburn, Mass.) took 12th with a throw of 12.04m.

On the track, sophomore Courtney Mazzio (West Chester, Pa.) ran the mile in 5:29.15 to take seventh place in the event, while freshman Maggie Fox (Natick, Mass.) would cross the line in 5:38.11, finishing in ninth place. Freshmen Sarah Croteau (Westminster, Mass.) and Claire Luke (Delmar, N.Y.) finished within .04 seconds of each other to take 12th and 13th in the 3000m run. Croteau crossed the line in 11:21.36, while Luke crossed in 11:21.40.

The women's 4x800m relay took third with a time of 9:46.20. Mazzio, junior Christine Carifio (Haverhill, Mass.), sophomore Colleen Spilka (Hamden, Conn.) and Maureen Meagher (Allentown, Pa.). The DMR relay team finished in 12:28.05 and in fourth place. Meagher ran the 1200m in 3:47, Carifio the 800m in 2:22, sophomore Lauren Tallon (Lake Forest, Ill.) covered the 400m in 62 seconds and sophomore Katie Clay (Beverly, Mass.) ran the mile in 5:16.

In the men's meet, senior Nicholas Carr (Concord, Mass.) threw a distance of 15.88m in the weight throw. His throw earned him sixth place and a streak of two meets in a row with a distance long enough to qualify for the New England Championship meet. On the track, Rougeot was the highest placing Crusader in the one mile run. Sophomores Brad Mish (Hadley, Mass.) and Sebastian Fidelus finished the mile within .02 seconds of each other, crossing the line in 4:34.46 and 4:34.48. Mish took 12th, while Fidelus took 13th. Senior Stephen Kress (Portland, Maine) took 20th in the 3000m run with a time of 9:30.61. Sophomore Matthew Talbot (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and senior John Ortolani (Williamsville, N.Y.) finished close behind Kress in 23rd and 24th spots.

The Holy Cross men's and women's indoor track and field teams will be back in action on Saturday, January 20 at the New Hampshire Invitational in Durham, N.H. The meet starts at 11:00 am.
