Mitchell Sets School Record As Women's Track & Field Takes First At Home Meet

WORCESTER, Mass.  Junior Abigail Mitchell (Manchester, N.H.) set a new Holy Cross record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as the women's outdoor track and field team finished first of five teams at its annual home meet on Saturday at the Hart Track. The Crusaders finished with 208.50 points as Mitchell finished second overall, setting the new school standard at 11:18.05.

Five Crusaders posted first place finishes as senior Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) won both the 100 and 200-meter dashes with times of 11.78 and 25.41 seconds, respectively. Sophomore Caroline Carley (Barrington, Ill.) finished the 1,500-meter run at 4:33.77 and senior Emily Hughes (Milton, Mass.) won the 5,000-meter run at 17:34.57, both career-best performances. Sophomore Melissa LaCoste (Amherst, N.H.) out jumped the field in the high jump with a personal-best height of 1.62 meters and senior Christy Manning (Scarborough, Maine) won the javelin throw with a distance of 38.31 meters. The 4x100-meter relay team also earned a first place finish with a time of 47.28 seconds.

Along with Mitchell, nine other Crusaders added individual second place finishes including junior Brianna Tabin (South Hadley, Mass.) who finished right behind Okpoebo in the 100 and 200 with times of 11.87 (career-best) and 25.72 seconds. Carley and Manning added runner-up performances in the 800 (2:13.87) and discus throw (38.76 meters), respectively. Junior Payton Shubrick (Springfield, Mass.) took second in the 400 with a personal-best time of 58.10, senior Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.H.) finished behind Hughes in the 5,000 at 17:49.15 and senior Mariel Flood (Kinnelon, N.J.) finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.86. Freshman Jennifer Kimball (South Weymouth, Mass.) took second in the high jump (1.58 meters), junior Michelle McGahan (Acton, Mass.) finished second in the pole vault (3.40 meters) and freshman Alexa Eldracher (Woodbridge, Conn.) was second in the triple jump (11.19 meters). The 4x400-meter relay team also earned a second place finish with a time of 3:59.65.

Other top performers for the Crusaders included junior Sarah Dahlstrom (Southborough, Mass.) who finished third in the high jump (1.53 meters), junior Alexandra Parise (Pine Bush, N.Y.) who took third in the pole vault (3.40 meters, personal-best) and junior MaryGrace Brogioli (Wareham, Mass.) who landed third in the triple jump (10.74 meters).

The women's track and field team will return to action on Sunday, April 27, at the Brown Invitational at 10:00 a.m.
