Women's Track & Field Races At Colonial Relays & New Hampshire

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's outdoor track and field team traveled to two meets this weekend as select student-athletes went to the Colonial Relays at William & Mary on Thursday-Saturday while others went to New Hampshire with Maine and Northeastern on Saturday. Freshman Rachel Sowinski (Mountain Top, Pa.) and junior Sarah Dahlstrom (Southborough, Mass.) led the team in Williamsburg, Va. with first place finishes and senior Lauren Bellerose (Shrewsbury, Mass.), junior Fiorella Johnson (Redding, Conn.) and sophomore Melissa LaCoste (Amherst, N.H.) were the top Crusader finisher at New Hampshire, each earning second place finishes. Three Holy Cross school records fell at the Colonial Relays as senior Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) sprinted to the finish in the 100-meter dash at with an ECAC qualifying and career-best time of 11.76 seconds, the 4x200-meter relay team finished at 1:42.24 and the distance medley relay team set a new school-best mark at 11:48.66.

Colonial Relays

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Crusaders finished ninth of 40 teams at the Colonial Relays as Sowinski finished the 1,500-meter run in first place with a time of 4:46.63 and Dahlstrom landed atop the field in the shot put with a throw of 11.78 meters. Okpoebo set the new school mark in the final heat of the 100 after taking fifth in qualifying with a time of 12.15 seconds. Junior Brianna Tabin (South Hadley, Mass.) finished just behind Okpoebo in the qualifying heat in sixth place (12.16) and finished fifth overall in the final heat with an ECAC qualifying and career-best time of 11.99 seconds.

Other top-10 performers for the Crusaders included senior Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.H.) who took fifth in the 10,000-meter run with at time of 37:57.50, sophomore Caroline Carley (Barrington, Ill.) who finished seventh in the seeded university run of the 800 at 2:11.47 and sophomore Catherine Gildea (Milford, Conn.) who finished eighth in the university 800 with a time of 2:16.82. Okpoebo also finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.94. The 4x100-meter relay team comprised of Tabin, junior Mackenzie Arndt (Merrimack, Mass.), junior Katie Bobinski (Torrington, Conn.) and Okpoebo finished third with an ECAC qualifying time of 47.40 while the 4x200-meter team of Tabin, junior Payton Shubrick (Springfield, Mass.), Bobinski and Okpoebo took sixth with a Holy Cross record time of 1:42.24. The distance medley relay team of junior Abigail Mitchell (Manchester, N.H.), Shubrick, Gildea and Carley added a fourth place finish with a school record time of 11:48.66.

In the field events, freshman Alexa Eldracher (Woodbridge, Conn.) took second in the triple jump with a distance of 11.08 meters and senior Christy Manning (Scarborough, Maine) finished fifth in the javelin at 34.23 meters. Dahlstrom added a sixth place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.60 meters while freshman Jennifer Kimball (South Weymouth, Mass.) landed ninth in the same event, also clearing 1.60 meters.

New Hampshire

DURHAM, N.H. – Bellerose finished the 800-meter run in second place with a time of 2:24.91 while Johnson took the runner-up spot in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.64. LaCoste landed second in the high jump at 1.57 meters. Sophomore Morgan Zurlo (Glen Falls, N.Y.) finished just behind LaCoste in the high jump in third at 1.52 meters.

Other top-five finishers for the Crusaders included sophomore Oona Wood (Williamstown, Mass.) who took fifth in the 400 with a time of 1:02.95 and sophomore Hannah Carey (Windham, N.H.) who finished fifth in the 800 at 2:26.83. In field events, freshman Samantha Speroni (Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif.) landed third in the pole vault at 3.12 meters while sophomore Alex Eckert (Bergenfield, N.J.) who took fifth in the same event at 2.82 meters. Junior Marissa Romano (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) earned a third place finish in the triple jump (10.90 meters) and fourth place finish in the long jump (5.12 meters). Fellow classmate MaryGrace Brogioli (Wareham, Mass.) finished behind Romano in the triple jump in fourth place with a distance of 10.87 meters. Freshman Cassandra Kobelski (Andover, Mass.) also posted a fifth place finish in the shot put with a distance of 11.11 meters.

The 4x400-meter relay team comprised of freshman Gabriela West (Chester, N.J.), Bellerose, Johnson and Wood added a fourth place finish with a time of 4:17.05.

The women's outdoor track and field team will return to action on Saturday, April 12, at the Minuteman Invitational at 11:30 a.m.
