Women's Track & Field Takes Seventh At New England Outdoor Championship

EASTON, Mass. – Junior Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) posted a second and fourth place finish in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, respectively, as the Holy Cross women's track and field team finished seventh of 35 teams at the 2013 New England Outdoor Championship on Saturday with 39.50 points. Okpoebo sprinted to the finish line in the 100 in 12.02 seconds and finished the 200 in 24.74 seconds. Rhode Island won the team title with 91.50 points.

Senior Brittany Gorski (Tewksbury, Mass.) led a field of four Crusaders in the 800-meter run, taking fourth place with a time of 2:11.77. Senior Kathleen Brekka (Hubbardston, Mass.) finished seventh (2:14.29, career-best), freshman Cassie Gildea (Milford, Conn.) took 11th (2:16.91, season-best) and senior Sarah Meinelt (Topsfield, Mass.) finished 18th (2:18.82). Sophomore Abigail Mitchell (Manchester, N.H.) added an 11th place finish with a time of 4:36.52 in the 1,500-meter run, setting a new career-fastest time.

In the relays, the 4x100 and 4x800-meter relay teams each earned third place finishes. The 4x100 team comprised of sophomore Brianna Tabin (South Hadley, Mass.), senior Melanie Forte (Milford, N.H.), sophomore Katie Bobinski (Torrington, Conn.) and Okpoebo and finished with a time of 47.27. The 4x800 team of Mitchell, freshman Caroline Carley (Barrington, Ill.), Brekka and Groski finished at 9:09.46.

In the field events, junior Christy Manning (Scarborough, Maine) finished fifth in the discus with a career-best throw of 39.60 meters,  freshman Melissa LaCoste (Amherst, N.H.) finished 11th in the high jump with a height of 1.60 meters and sophomore Michelle McGahan (Acton, Mass.) was tied for ninth in the pole vault at 3.35 meters.

Sophomore Sarah Dahlstrom (Southborough, Mass.) competed in heptathlon and took home a tie for eighth place with career-best 4,174 points, including second place finished in both the shot put (11.67 meters, season-best) and javelin (34.03 meters, career-best).

Yesterday, on day one of competition, junior Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.H.) took seventh in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 38:53.62 and sophomore Mackenzie Arndt (Merrimack, Mass.) finished 16th in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.12, bettering her career-best mark by .16 seconds and setting a new team season-best time.

Junior Amanda Waldron (Walpole, Mass.) crossed the finish line in 14th place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:57.92 while freshman Oona Wood (Williamstown, Mass.) finished fourth in her heat and 16th overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.46 seconds.

Manning took eighth in the javelin with at throw of 38.81 meters and senior Kelcey Germain (Auburn, Mass.) finished first in her flight and 10th overall it the hammer throw with a distance of 46.08 meters.
