Women's Track & Field Competes At Snowflake Classic And Dick Shea Open
The women's track and field team split up on Saturday as select members participated in the Snowflake Classic, hosted by Tufts, while others went to the Dick Shea Open, hosted by Army. Junior Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the way for the Crusaders at the Snowflake classic, finishing second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 400-meter dash. Five Crusaders recorded first place finishes at the Dick Shea Open.
SOMERVILLE, Mass. – Okpoebo sprinted to the finish line in the 200-meter dash in 25.32 seconds and finished the 400 in a career-best time of 58.04. Okpoebo also joined sophomore Katie Bobinski (Torrington, Conn.), senior Melanie Forte (Milford, N.H.) and sophomore Brianna Tabin (South Hadley, Mass.) as the 4x100-meter relay team finished third ina time of 48.94 seconds.
Other top-10 finishes for the Crusaders included junior Emily Hughes (Milton, Mass.) who took third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:03.24. Fellow classmates Amanda Waldron (Walpole, Mass.) and Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.H.) finished behind Hughes in sixth and 10th place, recording times of 18:14.50 and 18:37.06, respectively. Freshman Melissa LaCoste (Amherst, N.H.) finished tied for fifth in the high jump (1.55 meters), senior Kelcey Germain (Auburn, Mass.) took eighth in the hammer throw (career-best 44.75 meters) and junior Christy Manning (Scarborough, Maine) landed eighth in the javelin throw (34.14 meters). Tabin also took 10th in the 200-meter dash (26.72 seconds).
Dick Shea Open
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore Emilia Sainato (Albany, N.Y.), freshman Oona Wood (Williamstown, Mass.), junior Mariel Flood (Kinnelon, N.J.), sophomore Mackenzie Arndt (Merrimack, Mass.) and the 4x400-meter relay team comprised of sophomore Fiorella Johnson (Redding, Conn.), sophomore Payton Shubrick (Springfield, Mass.), Wood and freshman Victoria Engvold (Niskayuna, N.Y.) crossed the finish line in first place.
Sainato won the 100-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 15.40 seconds while Wood crossed the finish line in the 800-meter run at a season-best 2:19.27. Flood took first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.81 and Arndt surpassed a height of 3.72 meters in the pole vault. The 4x400 relay team finished with a time of 4:10.59.
Other top performers for the Crusaders included freshman MaryGrace Brogioli (Wareham, Mass.) who took second in the long jump with a season-best distance of 5.21 meters and sophomore Marissa Romano (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) who landed second in the triple jump with a distance of 11.01 meters. Arndt also finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.45.
Select members of the women's track and field team will return to action on Friday and Saturday, April 5-6, at the Duke Invitational. Other team members will travel to New Hampshire on Saturday, April 6.
