WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore sprinter Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished first in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash and third in the preliminaries of the 200-meter dash to qualify for tomorrow's final heats as the Holy Cross women's track and field team completed the first day of full team competition at the Patriot League Indoor Championship on Saturday, hosted by Army. Okpoebo ran the 60 in a season-best 7.69 seconds and 200 in 25.42 seconds.
Sophomore Brianna Tabin (South Hadley, Mass.) and senior Melanie Forte (Milford, N.H.) also qualified for the final in the 60-meter dash, taking seventh and eighth, respectively. Tabin crossed the finish line in 7.94 seconds while Forte sprinted in at 7.98 seconds. Tabin just missed qualifying for the final in the 200, taking ninth with a time of 26.13 seconds.
The 4x800-meter relay team comprised of senior Kathleen Brekka (Hubbardston, Mass.), freshman Caroline Carley (Barrington, Ill.), senior Sarah Meinelt (Topsfield, Mass.) and senior Brittany Gorski (Tewksbury, Mass.) took third with a time of 9:06.23. Sophomore Mackenzie Arndt (Merrimack, Mass.) added another top-five finish for the Crusaders, taking fifth in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.37 seconds, qualifying for tomorrow's final. Other top track performers included juniors Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.H.) and Amanda Waldron (Walpole, Mass.) who finished seventh and ninth, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run with times of 18:14.56 and 18:22.97.
Freshman Melissa LaCoste (Amherst, N.H.) led the way in the field events, finishing fifth in the high jump with a distance of 1.60 meters, tying her season-best mark. Senior Kelcey Germain (Auburn, Mass.) took eighth in the weight throw with a distance of 14.72 meters.
Yesterday, sophomore Sarah Dahlstrom (Southborough, Mass.) finished third in the pentathlon with a score of 3,089.
Bucknell leads the team competition after two days of competition with 50 points. Lehigh sits closely behind in second with 48.33 points, while Navy is currently third with 42 Points. Army (21.33), Holy Cross (14) and Lafayette (10.33) round out the top six spots.
The third and final day of Patriot League Indoor Championship competition will begin tomorrow, Feb. 17, at 10:00 a.m.
