Women's Track And Field Takes Third At UMass Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's track and field team finished third of 15 teams with 89 points at the UMass Invitational on Saturday. The Crusaders finished behind first place Albany (148.07) and second place UMass Amherst (103.64) but ahead of fourth place Boston College (85). Holy Cross was led by senior Katelyn Hartnett (Danvers, Mass.) who finished first overall in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:13.45 and sophomore Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) who finished first in the 100 meter dash (12.39 seconds) and third in the 200 meter dash (24.91 seconds). The 4x100 meter relay team comprised of freshman Katie Bobinski (Torrington, Conn.), Okpoebo, junior Melanie Forte (Milford, N.H.) and freshman Brianna Tabin (South Hadley, Mass.) also finished first overall with a time of 48.14 seconds.

Other top finishers for the Crusaders included junior Brittany Gorski (Tewksbury, Mass.) who finished fourth behind Hartnett in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:14.65 and freshman Melissa Sheridan (Loudonville, N.Y.) who took first in her section in the same event with a time of 2:28.16. Junior Kathleen Brekka (Hubbardston, Mass.) took fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:33.39 and freshman Abigail Mitchell (Manchester, N.H.) finished in sixth place with a time of 12:14.52. Forte finished fourth in her section and eighth overall in the 100 meter dash behind Okpoebo with a time of 12.76 and Tabin took fifth in her section and ninth overall with a time of 12.79.

In the 100 meter hurdles, freshman Julia Levesque (West Simsbury, Conn.) finished second in her section with a time of 16.30 seconds and her classmate Emilia Sainato (Albany, N.Y.) finished fifth in her section with a time of 16.62 seconds. Sophomore Amanda Waldron (Walpole, Mass.) finished fifth overall in the 5,000 meter with a time of 18:26.11 and her classmate Emily Hughes (Milton, Mass.) took sixth with a time of 18:27.08. Sophomore Mariel Flood (Kinnelon, N.J.) finished fourth in her section in the 400 meter with a time of 1:09.19. The 4x400 meter relay team comprised of Gorski, Hartnett, freshman Fiorella Johnson (Redding, Conn.) and Bobinski finished fourth overall with a time of 4:00.79.

In the field events, freshman Mackenzie Arndt (Merrimack, Mass.) finished second overall in the pole vault with a height of 3.20 meters. Senior Alexandria Culkeen (Beverly, Mass.) added a pair of sixth place finishes in the shot put (12.74 meters) and hammer throw (44.12 meters). Sophomore Christy Manning (Scarborough, Maine) took eighth in her flight and ninth overall in the hammer throw with a distance of 39.15 meters and finished ninth overall in the javelin throw with a distance of 32.80 meters. Culkeen and Manning also took part in the discus and finished fifth and eighth, respectively, with throws of 37.88 and 36.66 meters. Freshman Marissa Romano (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) finished ninth overall in the triple jump with a distance of 10.46 meters and second in her flight in the long jump with a distance of 5.20 meters to round out the top performances by the Crusaders.

The women's track and field team will return to action on Wednesday and Thursday, April 18-19, when the team hosts the Holy Cross Heptathlon at 12:00 p.m. (April 18) and 11:30 a.m. (April 19).
