WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross head women's track and field coach Egetta Alfonso has announced team awards for the 2010-2011 season, along with captains for the 2011-2012 season. Award winners were announced at a year-end awards banquet on Tuesday, May 10. Six individual awards were handed out and five captains were named for the 2011-2012 season.
Junior Katelyn Hartnett (Danvers, Mass.) was named Most Valuable. Hartnett broke the school record in the 800 four times this year, most recently at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship where she placed second with a time of 2:09.33. Hartnett also anchored the first place 4x800 relay team. During the indoor season, Hartnett set a new school record in the 1,000 at the New England Championship where she finished third with a time of 2:51.50.
Senior Courtney Burgess (Dracut, Mass.) earned the Outstanding Improvement award. Burgess earned first team All-Patriot League honors as a member of the 4x800 relay team. This year, Burgess recorded personal-best times in the 400, 800, 1,500 and one mile races.
Freshman Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) was named Most Valuable Rookie after taking first in the 100 and 200 at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship. Okpoebo also finished first in the 200 at the Patriot League Indoor Championship.
Junior Alexandria Culkeen (Beverly, Mass.) was named Most Valuable Field Athlete. Culkeen recorded personal-best distances in the discus and hammer throw. She led the team with an eighth place finish in the discus at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship and placed seventh in the shot put.
Junior Elizabeth Humphries (Siler City, N.C.) earned the Halper - Three Season Distance Award for her performances over the entire year, including cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field competition. Humphries led the team with a personal-best time of 17:45.36 in the 5,000.
Sophomore Brittany Gorski (Tewksbury, Mass.) was the recipient of the Coach's Award for Excellence. Gorski finished sixth in the 400 hurdles at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship with a personal-best time of 1:04.19.
Hartnett, Culkeen, junior Erin Linnehan (Litchfield, N.H.), junior Jennifer Bautista (St. John's, Newfoundland) and junior Paige Sutherland (Groveland, Mass.) were named captains for the 2011-2012 season.
Qualifying members of the women's track & field team will wrap up the 2011 season at the New England Outdoor Championship on May 13-14 in New Haven, Conn.
