Holy Cross Track & Field Falls At Maine
ORONO, Maine – The Holy Cross women's track and field team claimed first in nine events, while the men's team won four, but it wasn't enough to lead either team to victory over Maine on Saturday afternoon. The men's team fell by a score of 108-68, while the women's team was narrowly defeated by a score of 90-82.
Holy Cross claimed three victories in the field events, as sophomore Kelcey Germain (Auburn, Mass.) won the weight throw with a distance of 14.10 meters, senior Ashley Buckley (Duxbury, Mass.) claimed first in the high jump with a height of 1.52 meters and Junior Alexandria Culkeen (Beverly, Mass.) won the shot put with a distance of 12.11 meters.
On the track, the women's team was led by first place finishes in six events. Holy cross finished one-two in the 400, with freshman Catherine Cafaro (Garden City, N.Y.) finishing first with a time of 1:01.33 and freshman Lauren Bellerose (Shrewsbury, Mass.) crossing the line second with a time of 1:01.88. Sophomore Brittany Gorski (Tewksbury, Mass.) won the 500 with a time of 1:19.65, while junior Katelyn Hartnett (Danvers, Mass.) placed first in the 1,000 with a time of 2:56.28, missing the ECAC qualifying mark by .04 seconds. Holy Cross claimed the top two spots in the 200, with freshman Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) taking first with a time of 26.46 seconds and senior M. Siobhan Straub (Mattituck, N.Y.) claiming second with a time of 26.70 seconds. Freshman Allie Hunter (Medfield, Mass.) won the 3,000 with a time of 11:24.69 and junior Katelyn Andree (Colts Neck, N.J.) finished second with a time of 11:30.32. The relay team of Okpoebo, Gorski, senior Cassandra Anderson (Saugus, Mass) and Cafaro finished first in the 4x400 with a time of 4:06.20.
Senior Brendan Medeiros (Fall River, Mass.) led the men's team with two first place finishes. In the one mile, Medeiros claimed first with a New England Championship qualifying time of 4:15.46 and in the 800, Medeiros finished first with a time of 1:56.92. Freshman Sam McGrath (Tyngsboro, Mass.) finished first in the 400 with a time of 51.75 seconds. The 4x400 relay team of junior Stephen Madsen (New Providence, N.J.), McGrath, junior Conor Moran (Middleboro, Mass.) and senior Connor LaClair (Hyde Park, Vt.) finished first with a time of 3:33.43.
Holy Cross continues indoor action next week at the Valentine Invitational. The women's team will compete on Friday, Feb. 11, while the men's team competes on Saturday, Feb. 12.
