KINGSTON, R.I. – The Holy Cross women's track and field team returned to competition Friday at the Sorlein Memorial Invitational hosted by the University of Rhode Island. In the 55 meter dash, the Crusaders were led by a fourth place finish by sophomore Melanie Forte (Milford, N.H.) with a time of 7.48 seconds, narrowly missing the New England Indoor Championship qualifying time of 7.40 seconds. Forte also placed third in the 200 with a time of 26.94 seconds.
In the 55 meter hurdles, freshman Kylene Carey (East Bridgewater, Mass.) finished fourth with a time of 8.98 seconds. In the 400 sophomore Rachelle Sylvia (Westerly, R.I.) finished fifth with a time of 1:06.02. In the 500, senior Cassandra Anderson (Saugus, Mass.) placed fourth with a time of 1:19.77 and sophomore Brittany Gorski (Tewksbury, Mass.) finished fifth with a time of 1:20.62. Sophomore Sarah Meinelt (Topsfield, Mass.) finished fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:26.19 and in the 1,000 junior Katelyn Hartnett (Danvers, Mass.) qualified for the New England Indoor Championship with a second place finish and time of 2:58.84, while senior Courtney Burgess (Dracut, Mass.) placed third with a time of 3:03.36. In the one mile, sophomore Kathleen Brekka (Hubbardston, Mass.) placed third with a time of 5:11.69.,
In the field events, junior Alexandria Culkeen (Beverly, Mass.) led the Crusaders with a fifth place finish in the weight throw with a New England qualifying distance of 15.06 meters. In the long jump, Carey finished seventh with a distance of 4.81 meters and in the triple jump Meinelt placed seventh with a distance of 10.42 meters.
Holy Cross continues action on Jan. 15 at the Yale Invitational.
