Womens Track & Field Announces Team Awards And Captains
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross head women's track and field coach Egetta Alfonso has announced team awards for the 2009-2010 season, along with captains for the 2010-2011 season. Award winners were announced at a year-end awards banquet on Thursday, May 6. Seven individual awards were handed out and four captains were named for the 2010-2011 season.
Sophomore Erin Linnehan (Litchfield, N.H.) and senior Chantal Couture (Taunton, Mass.) were named Most Improved, Linnehan for her performances on the track and Couture for her performances in the field events. Linnehan set a new school record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.99 seconds at the Patriot League Indoor Championship. During the outdoor season, Linnehan ran a personal-best time in the 100 meter hurdles at the Duke Invitational. Couture set a new school record in the javelin with a distance of 40.38 meters at Holy Cross' home meet on April 18. Over the course of the season, she hit personal-best marks in the shot put and hammer throw.
Senior Tiffany Reid (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and sophomore Alexandria Culkeen (Beverly, Mass.) were named Most Valuable, Reid for her performances on the track and Culkeen for her performances in the field events. Reid earned six All-Patriot League first team honors this season, with first place finishes in the 60 meter dash, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash (indoor and outdoor), 4x100 and 4x400 at the indoor and outdoor Patriot League Championship. Culkeen finished with personal-best distances in the shot put, hammer throw and weight throw, including a fourth place finish in the shot put at the Patriot League Indoor Championship with a distance of 12.62 meters.
Freshman Melanie Forte (Milford, N.H.) was named Most Valuable Rookie and freshman Brittany Gorski (Tewksbury, Mass.) received the Coach's Award for Excellence in Track and Field. In her freshman campaign, Forte became the one of the fastest Crusaders on the track and, as a member of the 4x100, was named to the first team All-Patriot League for the relay team's first place finish at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship. Gorski competed for the Crusaders in the long sprints and hurdle events. Gorski recorded a personal-best time in the 400 hurdles at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship.
Sophomore Paige Sutherland (Groveland, Mass.) received the Halper - Three Season Distance Award for her performances over the entire year, including cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field competition. On the cross country course, Southerland was the top finisher in all seven races that she entered this year and has been the top Holy Cross performer in 13 career races. At the Patriot League Indoor Championship, Sutherland placed second in the 3,000 and 5,000 meter runs and then finished second in the 5,000 at the outdoor championship.
Juniors Allison Fimognari (Wilbraham, Mass.), Courtney Burgess (Dracut, Mass.), Cassandra Anderson (Saugus, Mass.) and M. Siobhan Straub (Mattituck, N.Y.) will serve as captains during their senior campaign.
The Crusaders finished fourth at the 2010 Patriot League Outdoor Championship on April 30-May 1 and qualifying members will continue action at the New England Championship on Friday-Saturday, May 7-8.
