Fairfield, Conn. - The Holy Cross women's tennis team took sixth place at this weekend's New England Women's Tennis Championship in Fairfield, Conn. On the double's courts, the duo of junior Amy Garrity (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and freshman Ivette Konopka (Shelton, Conn.) made it to the championship match in flight two. The pair started out with a convincing victory against Casino-Weiner from Hartford, 8-0. Next up was the number one ranked Finklestein-Kasinow from Sacred Heart. The result: an 8-4 win in favor of the Crusaders. Garrity and Konopka were set to take on Hedstrom and Peele from URI in the Championship match. Unfortunately, the URI pair would defeat the Crusaders, 8-6. In flight one doubles, senior Meredith Bacon (Hanover, N.H.) and junior Meg Moran (Concord, N.H.) would take eighth place and in flight tree, freshman Kristen Meahl (Falmouth, Maine) and sophomore Paige Brown (Huntington, N.Y.) would take fifth place.
In singles action, Moran would be the Holy Cross entry in flight one. Moran would lose her first match to Lara Maurer from URI (6-0, 6-1) and rebound to win her second match against Elise Clark from Stonehill, 6-4, 6-3. Moran would end up taking sixth place in the flight. In flight two, Konopka would face strong competition from Meg Gilroy from Providence, losing the match 6-3, 6-3. Konopka would then face one of her doubles opponents, Kasinow from Sacred Heart, this time without the favorable result. Konopka would lose the match 7-5, 6-2. Konopka would go on to win the seventh place match against Stephanie Schnobel from Hartford.
Bacon would take sixth place in flight three action. Bacon would drop her first match against Genevieve Prairie-Caron from Montreal, 6-2, 6-3. She would then rebound to win 6-3, 6-1 over Lauren Rowinski from Stonehill. Meahl was Holy Cross' best placing finisher in singles play. Meahl, who competed in flight four, took her first match from Sandra Bertay from Montreal 6-2, 6-2. Meahl moved onto the second round where she took on number one ranked Michaela Carrone from Fairfield, where she would lose a close match, 6-3, 7-5. Meahl won her third place match, convincingly, 6-0, 6-1 against Jessica Schnell from Sacred Heart.
Garrity would drop two consecutive matches on her way to victory in the seventh place match in flight five. Garrity would lose to doubles opponent Finklestein in the first round (6-2, 6-1) and to Hawkins-Hodgson from Providence (6-4, 6-1). Garrity would bounce back, however, letting her opponent win only one game in their match. Garrity took on Michelle Tafur from Hartford, winning the match 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Megan Manahan (Waverly, PA) would also take seventh place in flight six. Manahan would be defeated by Stef Catanzana from URI, 6-2, 6-1 and Ashley Amalfe from Sacred Heart, 6-1, 6-1.
The Crusaders would end up with 30 points and a sixth place finish out of eight teams. Rhode Island would take first place with a total of 78 points.
The Holy Cross women's tennis team returns to the courts starting Saturday October 21 at the ITA Regional event in Hanover, N.H. The event will last three days and matches begin at 9 AM each day of the competition.
