FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Freshman Carolyn Chandley (Worcester, Mass.) placed second at No. 6 singles, to lead the Holy Cross women's tennis team to a fourth place finish at the 2008 New England Championship. Rhode Island claimed the team title with 79 total points, followed by Sacred Heart in second (57 points), Fairfield in third (56 points) and Holy Cross in fourth (40 points). Bryant (33 points), Providence (31 points), Merrimack (23 points) and Hartford (14 points) rounded out the team scoring.
At No. 6 singles, Chandley defeated Jenn Cusack of Providence 6-3, 6-2, in the opening round, then downed Caitlyn Savoy of Fairfield 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Chandley fell to Brooke Hoover of Rhode Island 6-1, 6-2.
Senior Paige Brown (Huntington, N.Y.) and junior Kathryn Wilkie (Oak Brook, Ill.) also had a strong weekend, earning a third place finish for the Crusaders at No. 3 doubles. Browne and Wilkie defeated Jess Ruggles and Katie Greenberg of Hartford 8-5 in the opening match, before falling to Ashley Amalfe and Kristina Chao of Sacred Heart 8-6 in the semifinals. In the third-place match, Brown and Wilkie came back to beat Amanda Granville and Courtney Aviani of Bryant 8-2.
