SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Freshman Carolyn Chandley (Worcester, Mass.) won the Singles C-Flight championship and junior Kathryn Wilkie (Oak Brook, Ill.) won the D-Flight title, as the Holy Cross women's tennis team competed at the Siena Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday in the quarterfinals, Chandley defeated Katie Greenberg of Hartford in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Then on Sunday, she defeated Jen Cusack of Providence in the semifinals by scores of 7-5, 6-3, while in the finals she defeated Siena's Jes Asselin, 6-4, 6-4.
Wilkie swept Hartford's Margaret Potkay, 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and then defeated Siena's Lauren Garbade, 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals and Ally Wegner of Providence, 6-2, 6-2 to win the title.
Freshman Emily Marr (Holden, Mass.) also had a strong tournament as she advanced all the way to the B-Flight finals where she fell to Siena's Danielle Crill, 6-3, 6-2. On Saturday, Marr defeated Lauren Moy of Siena, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7, while she then edged Meg Gilroy of Providence in the semifinals, 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.
Senior Melanie Bunkie (Glastonbury, Conn.) advanced to the semifinals of the C-Flight Singles, while Wilkie and senior Paige Brown (Huntington, N.Y.) advanced to the semifinals of the B-Flight Doubles.
Junior Kristen Meahl (Falmouth, Maine) received the Sportsmanship Award along with Ashley Rissolo of Providence.
The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 24, when they travel to Providence, R.I., to play Providence at 4:00 p.m.
