Holy Cross Women's Tennis Starts Fall Tennis at Fairfield

Fairfield, Conn. - The Holy Cross Women's tennis team tennis team kicked off their fall tennis schedule against a variety of opponents in Saturday's Fairfield Doubles Festival in Fairfield, Conn. In Flight One, senior Meredith Bacon (Hanover, N.H.) and junior Meg Moran (Concord, N.H.) faced from Providence, Fairfield and UConn. In the flight's fifth place match, the pair would be defeated by a duo from Sacred Heart by a score of 8-1.

In Flight two, freshman Ivette Konopka (Shelton, Conn.) and junior Amy Garrity (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) would defeat a pair from Hartford in their opening match of the day. The score was 8-2. After tough matches with Fairfield B and Sacred Heart, Konopka and Garrity would look to rebound in the fifth place match against Fairfield A. Fairfield would defeat the Crusaders by a score of 8-4, placing them in sixth place in flight two.

Two teams from Holy Cross would compete in Flight three, but would never face each other. The Crusaders A entry of freshman Kristen Meahl (Falmouth, ME.) and sophomore Paige Brown (Huntington, N.Y.) would defeat teams from Providence (8-2), Fairfield (8-6) and Sacred Heart B (8-0). The three consecutive wins placed the pair in a semifinal match. Meahl and Brown would overtake Sacred Heart A by a score of 8-3. The Crusaders would eventually be defeated in the final match against UConn by a score of 8-2.

The Holy Cross B entry in flight three, the pair of senior Ginienne Santoro (Guilford, Conn.) and sophomore Melanie Bunke (Glastonbury, Conn.), would start their tournament with a victory over Providence with a score of 8-4. The duo would then get defeated in tough matches from UConn (score: 8-0) and Sacred Heart A (score: 8-3).

The Holy Cross women's tennis team will return to action this weekend against Merrimack on Saturday, September 16.The matches begin at 12 noon.
