Holy Cross Women's Tennis Defeats Smith, 7-0, On Senior Day

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's tennis team defeated Smith, 7-0, on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at the Holy Cross Tennis Courts. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 10-7 overall and have won three matches in a row, while the Pioneers conclude their dual-match season with a 7-13 record. With the victory, Holy Cross will also have a winning record for the season. Last year, the Crusaders defeated Smith, 6-3. This was the last match of the season at the Holy Cross Tennis Courts, as the Crusaders went 8-2 on the courts. Before the match, seniors Paige Brown (Huntington, N.Y.) and Melanie Bunke (Glastonbury, Conn.) were honored for their hard work and dedication to the team on and off the court.

Holy Cross won all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The No. 1 doubles team of junior Kristen Meahl (Falmouth, Maine) and freshman Carolyn Chandley (Worcester, Mass.) earned an 8-6 victory over Jaimi Inskeep and Gianna Teague, while at No. 2 doubles, freshmen Emily Marr (Holden, Mass.) and Emma Rudnik (Lake Bluff, Ill.) edged Mindy Chu and Allyson Hawkins, 9-8, as they won the tiebreaker by a score of 7-4. Brown and Bunke won the No. 3 doubles match over Margaret Steiner and Melissa Wong, 8-3.

The Crusaders then took all six singles matches to earn the 7-0 victory. Meahl earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Inskeep at No. 1 singles, while Marr won the No. 2 singles match over Teague by a score of 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Chandley defeated Chu, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7, while junior Hailee Lange (Miami, Fla.) earned the win over Steiner at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Ivette Konopka (Shelton, Conn.) won the No. 5 singles match over Hawkins, 6-0, 6-2, while junior Kathryn Wilkie (Oak Brook, Ill.) did not lose a game as she defeated Wong, 6-0, 6-0.

The Crusaders return to action on April 20 for the regular season-finale when they play at Hartford at 3:00 p.m. Holy Cross defeated the Hawks, 6-1, earlier this season on Oct. 7. Meahl, Marr, Lange, Konopka and Chandley each won singles matches, while the doubles teams of Meahl and Rudnik, Chandley and Marr, and Brown and Wilkie each won their matcdhes.
