WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Kristen Meahl (Falmouth, Maine), freshman Emily Marr (Holden, Mass.), junior Hailee Lange (Miami, Fla.) and junior Kathryn Wilkie (Oak Brook, Ill.) each won singles matches as the Holy Cross women's tennis team defeated Providence, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon at the Holy Cross Tennis Courts. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 8-7 overall, while the Friars fall to 5-12. These two teams split the season-series as Providence won 4-3 earlier this season on Sept. 24.
The Friars won all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Meahl and freshman Carolyn Chandley (Worcester, Mass.) were defeated by Ayushi Sinha and Meghan Gilroy, 8-6. After trailing 7-0, the No. 2 doubles team of junior Ivette Konopka (Shelton, Conn.) and Marr then won six straight games to make it a 7-6 match, but Ashley Rissolo and Melanie Albert were able to win the 14th game for the 8-6 victory.
At No. 2 singles, Marr defeated Sinha, 7-5, 6-1. Lange won the No. 4 singles match over Albert, 6-4, 6-3, while Wilkie defeated Liz Gillis at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
With the overall match tied at 3-3, it all came down to the No. 1 singles match between Meahl and Rissolo. Meahl won the first set, 7-6, as she won the tie-breaker by a score of 7-2. Rissolo then moved the match to a third set as she won the second set, 6-2. Meahl gave the Crusaders the victory by winning the third set, 7-6, as she won a thrilling tie-breaker, 7-5.
The Crusaders return to action on April 18 when they play Salve Regina at the Holy Cross Tennis Courts at 1:00 p.m.
