NEWPORT, R.I. – The Holy Cross women's tennis team claimed all three flights to win the 2013 Women's Grass Court Doubles Tournament hosted by Salve Regina at the Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders earned 12 points, while Curry, UMass Dartmouth and Bridgewater State all tied for second place with six points apiece.
Freshman Virginia Peck-Philips (Palm Beach Gardens. Fla.) and junior Taylor Stathis (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) edged out Assumption for the Flight A championship by a score of 9-8 (1-0). The duo defeated Curry in the quarterfinals, 8-2, and beat Colby-Sawyer in the semifinals, 8-3.
In the Flight B tournament, sophomore Jaclyn Carroll (Tewksbury, Mass.) and senior Molly Montgomery (Winnetka, Ill.) defeated Bridgewater State, 8-5, to win the main draw. The pair defeated UMass Dartmouth in the first round, 8-4, and bested Colby Sawyer in the semifinals, 9-7.
Freshman Marielle Newell (St. Louis, Mo.) and senior captain Maya Welch (Rye, N.Y.) claimed the Flight C championship with an 8-3 victory over UMass Dartmouth. To get to the finals, the doubles team defeated Johnson and Wales, 8-6, in the quarterfinals and the Curry in the semifinals by a score of 8-2.
Holy Cross returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 14 when it will host Connecticut College at the Sinnott Family Tennis Facility beginning at 1:00 p.m.
