Women’s Tennis Falls To Bryant, 6-1, In Season Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's tennis team was defeated by Bryant, 6-1, in the season opener on Monday afternoon at the Sinnott Family Tennis Facility. The Bulldogs begin the season at 1-0, while the Crusaders start the 2013-2014 campaign at 0-1.

Holy Cross gained its lone point of the match in No. 6 singles, as freshman Marielle Newell (St. Louis, Mo.) defeated Bryant's Jenna LaBarre, 6-2, 6-3. Holy Cross No. 1 singles player, freshman Virginia Peck-Philips (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) lost her first career match 6-3, 6-1, while junior Taylor Stathis (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) lost her No. 2 singles tilt, 6-1, 6-3.

The Crusaders No. 2 doubles pair of sophomore Jaclyn Carroll (Tewksbury, Mass.) and senior Molly Montgomery (Winnetka, Ill.) lost their match, 9-7, while the No. 3 doubles pair of Newell and senior captain Maya Welch (Rye, N.Y.) was defeated by the same score.

Holy Cross returns to action on Friday, Sept. 13, when it will host Siena at 4:00 p.m. at the Sinnott Family Tennis Facility.
